The weekend saw Neymar Jr. become Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, and Wolves player Matheus Cunha had a humorous post-game exchange with his teammate.
On Saturday, Brazil trounced Bolivia 5-1 in a World Cup qualifying match, with Neymar scoring twice.
Neymar and the legendary Pele each had 77 goals going into the contest.
Neymar scored his 78th goal, making history, after missing a penalty.
He scored another goal just before the end of the game to bring his total to 79.
Given some of the players who have worn the jersey, it is an incredible accomplishment by the 31-year-old. Shortly after the game, he had an amusing contact with Wolves’ Cunha.
Over the weekend, Neymar Jr. made history by becoming Brazil’s Matheus Cunha’s mother posed for a photo with the superstar after making history
Cunha is back in the Brazil team as a result of Wolves’ strong start to the current campaign.
Since September 22 he has not been a member of the team until now.
On Saturday, he came off the bench to open the Bolivia game, but Fernando Diniz gave him the final 20 minutes.
He failed to register on the scoreboard. For Cunha, who only had nine touches of the ball and completed six of seven passes attempted (Sofascore), it was a somewhat unimpressive cameo. Nevertheless, it was thrilling to see Cunha re-enter the race wearing the illustrious yellow jersey.
He celebrated the event with an Instagram post after the game.
At the game, Cunha’s mother was present. Cunha also posted a photo of herself and Neymar, a historic figure.
The post’s caption reads: “Belém, what an incredible place this is. We are grateful that you support the national team with the same zeal as we do. A fresh cycle starts! Boring.
And on the day that Ney surpasses all other national team scorers, Ms. @luzicunha humiliates me by pleading for a picture with her idol. Nice to have such a brand experience. Brilliant @neymarjr.
Neymar joked “we are together” in his response to the post, which included a few laughing emojis.
