Elliot Embleton was left ‘heartbroken’ by Derby County manager Paul Warne after injuring himself in training on the eve of the Rams’ 2-0 win over Carlisle United. Embleton, on loan from Sunderland, will have a scan today after injuring his thigh when taking a corner in training on Friday.
It’s a setback for the midfielder, who has only recently returned from a nine-month layoff after injuring his ankle and sustaining ligament damage while playing for the Black Cats last December. Embleton joined League One Derby on a season-long loan on deadline day and has made two appearances.

It’s a setback for the midfielder, who has only recently returned from a nine-month layoff after injuring his ankle and sustaining ligament damage while playing for the Black Cats last December. Embleton joined League One Derby on a season-long loan on deadline day and has made two appearances for the club, one as a substitute in the league against Barnsley.
Ten days later, he made his first start for the Rams in the midweek 2-0 EFL Trophy win over Lincoln City, in which he played for an hour. “It’s disappointing,” Warne said to DerbyshireLive. We’ve gradually increased Elliot’s minutes once he completed his therapy.
“He played Tuesday night [against Lincoln], took a day off Wednesday, a light session Thursday, and a light session Friday.” He took a set-piece, his fourth corner, and felt something in his quad, so it’s quite frustrating. In my time, I’ve never seen somebody pull anything taking a corner at the end of a session.
“You feel for Elliot first and foremost. He’s worked really hard to get himself into a position to play and then that happens.
“He was heartbroken. He will have a scan on Monday and see where we go from there.” Derby’s win saw them climb three places to ninth in the table. Also in League One, Sunderland’s on-loan defender Joe Anderson came off the bench for the final five minutes as Shrewsbury Town lost 1-0 against Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.
Ruel Sotiriou’s goal in the 20th minute was enough to give Orient the points and condemn the Shrews to a third straight league defeat, which saw them drop two places to 17th in the table. Anderson was also a substitute in the Shrews’ midweek EFL Trophy game against Brighton U21s at the New Meadow, coming on in the final minute as the game ended goalless.
Shrewsbury picked up an extra point in the group game by winning a penalty shootout 4-1, with Anderson converting the winning spot-kick. In League Two, on-loan Sunderland goalkeeper Alex Bass helped AFC Wimbledon end their four-game winless streak in the league as he helped the Dons to a 3-1 win against ten-man Walsall at the Bescot Stadium.
Connor Lemmonheigh-Evans put Wimbledon ahead after six minutes, but the hosts were reduced to ten men in the 37th minute when Taylor Allen was sent off for a nasty challenge on Omar Bugiel. Wimbledon’s second-half lead was cut short when Armani Little’s penalty attempt was saved, and Walsall equalized in the 58th minute by Freddie Draper.
But Jack Currie put the Dons back in ahead three minutes later, and Ali Al-Hamadi made it 3-1 with seven minutes remaining. Wimbledon climbed three spots to seventh place in the league.
Zak Johnson, a young Sunderland defender, joined National League Hartlepool United on a month’s loan on Friday, but he did not play in their 1-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday.
