Leicester City manager offers his thoughts on the club’s 3-0 win over Preston, which included a double from Kieran Dewsbury-Hall and a tap-in from Kelechi Iheanacho. Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca has stated that nine wins in the first ten Championship games is “not normal” and that the records of the division’s other top clubs prove this.
City defeated Preston 3-0 on Wednesday night, returning to the top of the Championship table with 27 points out of a possible 30. It is the best start to a season by any team since the division was renamed 20 years ago.
Rivals continue to point to City’s Premier League quality, but Maresca said in response that there are other big sides in the division who are not doing as well as City are, and so his players deserve credit. Fellow relegated outfits Leeds and Southampton have 16 points from their first 10 games and are 11 points off the pace City are setting.
Leicester City player ratings v Preston: Ndidi’s excellent form continues in impressive win
“I’m happy,” Maresca said. “I just said to the players that what they have done until today is not normal. It’s not just because your club is Leicester that you achieve something like this. There are more clubs in the Championship this year, important like us, but they struggle. So it’s something important.
“The first thing I said to the players after the game was that you are doing something unbelievable. Don’t trust people, your friends, people from outside, who say that only because you are Leicester you can achieve that.
“There are more clubs that are important in the same way as Leicester and have important players. And they struggle. So what they have done is fantastic.”
But ten games is not a full season, and they still have seven months to prove they are deserving of promotion. They return to work immediately, as they face Stoke City on Saturday.
“Unfortunately it’s not finished because it’s only October,” Maresc said. “We definitely need to keep doing it.” Every game must be displayed. Yes, you are Leicester, a huge club in the Championship, but you have to show, and they do every game. This is fantastic news for the supporters. You can tell they’re giving their all.”
“We always say the same thing: it’s early days.” We’ve only played ten games, but we’ve won nine of them, which makes us quite delighted. But we have another game in less than 72 hours, and we have to be focused on that.”
