This afternoon, Newcastle United will face West Ham United at the London Stadium (kick-off 8 p.m.). Former Arsenal player Paul Merson believes Newcastle United will defeat West Ham United this afternoon (kick-off 2pm) at the London Stadium.
Eddie Howe’s side return to league play after a stunning 4-1 Champions League triumph against French champions Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.
Merson says he was “scared” that the Magpies would be “overwhelmed” by the occasion of their first home game in the competition in 20 years.
United, though, rose to the occasion thanks to goals from Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff, and Fabian Schar.
“Newcastle pulled off an amazing result in the Champions League,” he remarked. They did things their way, put PSG under pressure, and had the crowd going.
“I was afraid they’d be overwhelmed by the magnitude of the occasion and play it like a European game.” The pace was incredible, and what we saw demonstrated that the Premier League is the best league in the world.”
The Hammers also secured a significant European victory on Thursday, defeating Freiburg 2-1 in Germany.
In the Premier League table, David Moyes’ side is one point and one spot above Newcastle, who are now six games unbeaten.
The Magpies won 5-1 at the London Stadium in their previous visit, with Callum Wilson and Joelinton netting braces. Both players are scheduled to have late fitness tests after suffering hamstring injuries in recent weeks.
