Reportedly, clubs in the Saudi Pro League have expressed interest in acquiring the services of Callum Wilson, the seasoned goal scorer for Newcastle United, during the January transfer window. According to a report by Fichajes, the Saudi Pro League clubs owned by PIF are planning to target prominent stars from Premier League clubs once again in the upcoming January transfer window. Callum Wilson, the prolific striker for Newcastle United, is among the top three players on their wish list.
Wilson, who has been Newcastle’s leading goal scorer for the past three seasons, joined the Magpies from Bournemouth for approximately £20 million in September 2020. He has consistently delivered goals at St. James’ Park ever since. His strong presence as a poacher in front of the goal has endeared him to fans, and his performance statistics speak for themselves. With 40 goals in 79 Premier League appearances for Newcastle United, including an impressive 18-goal tally last season, he played a crucial role in helping the club achieve a remarkable fourth-place finish and secure a spot in the Champions League.
His goal-scoring prowess has solidified his place in Newcastle’s history books as one of the club’s most revered scorers, currently ranking fifth on the club’s all-time Premier League scoring chart, with just seven goals separating him from the second-place holder, Peter Beardsley.
Although Wilson entered the final year of his previous contract with Newcastle last summer, he agreed to a one-year extension that keeps him at St. James’ Park until the summer of 2025. Nevertheless, it seems that Wilson is now a target for the Saudi Pro League in the January transfer window, as they continue their pursuit of Premier League stars.
Several notable talents have made the move to the Middle East this year, including Allan Saint-Maximin, who transferred from Newcastle United. While they have expressed interest in players like Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne, signing either of them would prove to be challenging. However, there are other players that Saudi clubs could consider, and Callum Wilson is one of them.
This Saudi interest in Wilson raises concerns for Newcastle United, as his potential departure would leave them with a void in a crucial position on the field. It goes without saying that finding a suitable replacement striker in the likely inflated January transfer market would be a daunting task.
Beyond being a dependable goal-scorer, Wilson is highly regarded by manager Eddie Howe and has also assumed a leadership role in the dressing room at St. James’ Park, being part of Eddie Howe’s leadership group on Tyneside.
Whether Wilson will entertain a move to Saudi Arabia in the coming months remains uncertain. However, the substantial financial incentives on offer could be hard to resist. Nonetheless, it is advisable for Newcastle United to reject any offers for Wilson, at least until the end of the season, given that they are still competing on multiple fronts this season.
