Jeff Van Gundy, the former NBA coach who transitioned into a seasoned broadcaster, has taken on a new role as a special consultant for the Boston Celtics. Fans first observed Van Gundy’s name listed as a special consultant on the Celtics roster, and the team’s official confirmation followed (courtesy of Brian Robb from MassLive.com). In his new capacity, Van Gundy will serve as an advisor to Boston’s basketball operations and collaborate with both the Celtics and their G-League affiliate, the Maine Red Claws.
At 61 years old, Van Gundy brings a wealth of coaching experience, having previously led the New York Knicks during the Patrick Ewing era from 1995 to 2001, with the team making it to the NBA Finals in 1999. He subsequently took the reins as the head coach of the Houston Rockets from 2003 to 2007. After his coaching stint, he transitioned into broadcasting and was a prominent figure on the ABC/ESPN lead broadcast team alongside Mark Jackson and play-by-play commentator Mike Breen. However, following the 2023 NBA Finals, both Van Gundy and Jackson parted ways with ABC/ESPN.
It’s worth noting that Van Gundy has continued to stay involved in coaching; he had the opportunity to coach the USA Basketball team during the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup and also guided the squads representing the USA in World Cup qualifying. These games took place during the NBA season, so the teams were comprised of G-League players and a few international players who were granted leave from their respective teams.
