Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson is making history, but he recognizes that he still has a considerable distance to cover before he can be mentioned in the same breath as Alan Shearer.
During an appearance on the BBC Sounds’ Footballers Football Podcast, Wilson mentioned, “I knew I was getting close, but I didn’t realize I’d moved into third place on the all-time list during the game. With second place within striking distance, it’s something I aim to achieve soon. If you’re scoring goals and moving up the rankings, it’s a sign that you’re doing your job on the pitch. Hopefully, by the end of my Newcastle career, I can secure second place, but Alan Shearer is miles ahead, isn’t he?”
Wilson currently shares the top goal-scoring spot for Newcastle in all competitions this season with fellow striker Alexander Isak. Additionally, he leads the league in goals per 90 minutes this season in the top flight with a rate of 1.91.
Although Wilson acknowledges that he has a long way to go to reach Shearer’s record, he humorously remarked that with an extended contract, he might be able to approach that milestone given his current form. He said, “I’d probably need Newcastle to offer me a six- or seven-year contract to have a shot at catching him. It’s remarkable when you consider that the second-place record is 48 goals behind, and the first-place record is a staggering 100 goals ahead. If I can reach 60, 70, or 80 goals, I’ll be a mainstay for quite a while.”
He added, “If I had spent a decade at Newcastle, I’d like to believe I could have scored over 150 goals for the club. Even if you were averaging 10 goals a season, that’s 100 goals, but as a striker, you aim for more. If you were consistently hitting 15 or 20 goals per season, you’d reach your target.”
