Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham signing held back in heated clash after FA Cup victory

After securing a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup, Wrexham AFC’s forward, James McClean, engaged in a heated dispute with Mansfield Town fans. This incident occurred right after the match, which propelled Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s team to the next round of the prestigious competition.

The incident, which garnered more than 1.2 million views on Twitter, captured the 34-year-old McClean gesturing towards Mansfield fans as he exited the Field Mill pitch. Some opposing fans took offense to his gestures, prompting a few supporters to approach him, though they stayed behind the advertising boards.

In response to the situation, McClean showed signs of anger, gesturing back at the spectators before being restrained

by Wrexham’s backroom staff and escorted down the tunnel. Throughout the game, McClean endured jeers from the home crowd, exacerbating the tense atmosphere.

McClean had started the game against Mansfield, during which Sam Dalby scored the opening goal only 23 minutes into the match. The forward delivered a left-footed shot into the net’s roof, eluding goalkeeper Christy Pym.

Wrexham extended their lead early in the second half when Paul Mullin calmly placed the ball into the net after a defensive mix-up. Mansfield managed to pull one goal back through Rhys Oates minutes later but failed to add another.

The victory marked Wrexham’s ninth consecutive game without a loss and their third consecutive win in all competitions.

Following the win, Wrexham’s head coach, Phil Parkinson, praised the team’s performance, stating, “It was a highly competitive game played in challenging conditions. Mansfield had been in excellent form and, except for their defeat on Tuesday, had gone unbeaten in nearly 20 games. However, I thought our team played exceptionally well. The two goals we scored were impressive, especially the first one. Although we had other opportunities in the first half, we didn’t fully capitalize on them. The team’s performance justified us going into halftime with a more significant lead, and we had to show resilience as they pressed us hard. We managed to secure the second goal, and despite their immediate response, the crowd’s enthusiasm, and the challenges they posed, we held firm as a collective, delivering a commendable performance.”

Wrexham is scheduled to face Yeovil at The Racecourse Ground in the next round of the FA Cup. Their next match is against Port Vale at home in the group stages of the Football League Trophy on Tuesday.
