Mansfield supporters challenge James McClean after Wrexham’s FA Cup away victory

James McClean, who has earned over 100 caps for the Republic of Ireland, was captured in a video engaging in an argument with Mansfield supporters shortly after Wrexham’s FA Cup first-round victory over the weekend. As Wrexham left the pitch following their win, McClean was seen in a heated exchange with a Mansfield fan who had walked down to the side of the pitch. Another home supporter attempted to climb the fence but was stopped by security personnel as the team headed down the tunnel. The exact cause of the argument remains unclear.

James McClean has faced jeers from some supporters in the past, particularly around Remembrance weekend, due to his refusal to wear the poppy, a symbol of remembrance for those who died in conflicts. Despite this, it is uncertain what triggered this specific post-match incident at Mansfield.

James McClean explains why he's decided to make Wrexham move

Following Wrexham’s qualification for the second round, McClean received applause from the away supporters. It’s worth noting that McClean recently announced his retirement from international football, with his final appearance for the Republic of Ireland scheduled to be a friendly against New Zealand at home.

McClean, who made his international debut in 2012 and reached 100 caps in June during a match against Gibraltar, has decided to step away from international duty. Ireland’s head coach, Stephen Kenny, is expected to announce the squad for this month’s matches against the Netherlands and New Zealand this Thursday.

At the club level, Wrexham currently stands third in League Two with 30 points from their first 16 games. In the FA Cup second round, they are set to play against Yeovil Town, a National League side, at home.
