When Benfica decided to extend Gonçalo Guedes’ loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer, there was significant anticipation regarding the contribution he could make to the Eagles in the current season.
The forward had a brief stint in Lisbon earlier in the year, which was marred by injuries. This was a key reason for extending his loan for an additional year. After recovering from knee surgery, he only made his season debut in October.
However, Guedes’ performances have not been particularly impressive, with only 151 minutes played in five appearances so far. Benfica manager Roger Schmidt addressed this situation in a press conference, expressing his
goal of helping Guedes regain his peak form. Schmidt acknowledged that it was a challenging situation for Guedes, who had previously played well for Wolverhampton, suffered a knee injury, and was now back on loan at Benfica. The club is focused on developing him after his recovery, but they also recognize the importance of giving him playing time to aid in his improvement without overburdening him.
Upon his return to Wolverhampton last summer, Guedes was still in the process of recovering from surgery. Consequently, Wolverhampton had limited options regarding his status in the transfer market. Wolverhampton is now hopeful that Guedes will bounce back and have a successful season in Lisbon, as this could lead to a more favorable deal in the future. Guedes is under contract with the English club until 2027 and is valued at €23 million according to Transfermarkt.
