Tommy Doyle expressed his gratitude for the warm reception he received from Sheffield United supporters during his homecoming, even though his Wolves side suffered a late defeat over the weekend. Doyle, on loan at Wolves, made his full Premier League debut at Bramall Lane, but it wasn’t in the red and white of the Blades.
Doyle became a fan favorite during a successful loan spell with Sheffield United last season. However, the Blades couldn’t afford to bring him back this summer as Manchester City was keen on selling him. Doyle’s current loan deal at Molineux includes an option for a permanent switch at a bargain fee, estimated at around £4 million.
The England U21 international received a warm reception from the fans before the game, and during the match, he shared a lighthearted moment with Blades supporters at a corner, moving the ball out of the quadrant intentionally. Reports also mentioned him patting his heart in their direction during the game, and Doyle saluted the home crowd when he was substituted.
Sheffield United went on to secure their first win of the season, with Ollie Norwood scoring a late penalty in front of the Kop. After the game, Doyle expressed his thoughts, saying, “It was a tough game. The second half wasn’t good enough. They gained momentum, and once this place gets going, it’s difficult.”
Returning to Bramall Lane, Doyle faced his friend James McAtee from Manchester City. He acknowledged his return, saying, “It was good to be back, but my primary focus was to win the game. I’m with Wolves now, and I wanted the three points. Everyone knows my time here was good, but I’m at Wolves now, and I have to look forward and focus on my time with them.”
