Newcastle is reportedly “in the mix” for Sporting Lisbon center back Gonçalo Inácio, who is widely anticipated to complete a “big transfer” in 2024, according to Portuguese publication A Bola.
It was recently implied that, despite sending scouts to watch the 22-year-old, we weren’t prepared to shell out the big bucks for the highly-regarded defender. A Bola, however, insists that we maintain our interest in the long run.
Inacio is reportedly being watched by a number of Premier League teams in addition to Real Madrid, who is also hoping to add a new center-back in the upcoming transfer window.
The Portuguese international, in spite of the competition to sign him, inked a new contract that increased his release clause to €60 million. Although a lesser price might be worked out, it’s thought Sporting won’t let him go for less.
It could be challenging for Sporting to sign Inacio this month given that the defender Ousmane Diomande left for the AFCON in January. For the last eighteen months, Inacio has been connected to a possible transfer to St James’ Park.
