Over 1,100 loyal Reading supporters are eagerly making the trip to Shrewsbury Town for Saturday’s match, fueled by the hope that their beloved club can break a concerning record. Despite languishing at the bottom of League One and facing an eight-point gap from safety, Reading has witnessed a notable increase in their average away following this season. The trend is exemplified by the fact that the Royals have consistently drawn more than 1,000 supporters at each of their seven away matches.
As they prepare to visit Shrewsbury for the first time since 1991, these devoted fans are not just seeking a victory; they are desperately hoping to avoid an unfortunate milestone. Reading’s last away win in league football dates back to November 12, 2022, when they secured a last-gasp victory against Hull City. Now, with 19 league matches spanning both the Championship and League One, a draw or defeat at Croud Meadow on Saturday will mark a full calendar year without an away win.
The Royals won’t have another chance to break this streak until nearly 2,000 supporters make the short journey to face Wycombe Wanderers. By that point, the winless run on the road will have extended to over 375 days. Only Rotherham United has endured a longer wait for an away win, currently standing at 20 matches.
Despite the challenging circumstances, up to 500 tickets are still available for Reading fans, with the option for supporters to purchase them on the day at the stadium. The Reading faithful are undoubtedly hoping that their unwavering support will inspire the team to overcome the odds and secure a crucial victory.
