Wolves’ sporting director Matt Hobbs has been handed a one-match ban and a £4,000 fine

The fallout from Wolves’ draw with Newcastle United continues, with Wolves’ sporting director, Matt Hobbs, facing consequences for comments made after the match. Hobbs has been handed a one-match ban and a £4,000 fine for his actions in the tunnel after the full-time whistle. The controversy stemmed from Anthony Taylor’s decision, later ratified by VAR, to award Newcastle a penalty for a foul on Fabian Schar just before half-time. Wolves boss Gary O’Neil described the decision as ‘scandalous,’ and the match was marked by VAR-related discussions.

Gary O'Neil's attention to detail and confident manner convinced Wolves he was the right man for the Molineux job - following the shock departure of Julen Lopetegui just days before the start

The FA’s statement revealed that Hobbs admitted using improper, abusive, and insulting language towards a match official in or around the tunnel after the final whistle. An independent Regulatory Commission imposed the sanctions following a hearing, and the written reasons will be published later.

The incident adds to the ongoing debates and controversies surrounding VAR decisions in recent football matches, with Newcastle United finding themselves in the middle of another VAR-related controversy just a week later in their game against Arsenal.
