Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Gary O’Neil disclosed that PGMOL chief Howard Webb acknowledged the error in awarding Sheffield United a penalty in their recent fixture. Referee Robert Jones had deemed that George Baldock was fouled by Fabio Silva, leading to a VAR check that supported the decision. However, a subsequent panel unanimously concluded that the penalty should not have been given, affecting Wolves’ results adversely this season.
O’Neil, in a post-match press conference, had hinted at Wolves being deprived of six points due to contentious decisions in games against Manchester United, Luton Town, and Newcastle United. Ahead of the match against Tottenham Hotspur, O’Neil shared details of his discussion with Webb after the Sheffield United defeat, emphasizing an understanding of Webb’s efforts to improve officiating standards.
During the conversation, O’Neil stated, “I had a good honest conversation with Howard where we feel things are and our opinions on it. There is an understanding on my part that Howard is responsible for trying to shift the standard and make things better. He’s working really hard to do that. They recognize last week’s decision [on the penalty] was incorrect so hopefully they can recognize the next one before Tuesday’s reviews and recognize in live situations.”
Despite the unfavorable decisions, O’Neil stressed the need for improvement within the team and expressed a singular focus on making Wolves better. He had previously commented on the use of VAR in football, describing it as a “crazy place.”
Wolves aim to climb to 11th position in the Premier League standings in their upcoming match against Tottenham Hotspur at Molineux.
