AC Milan’s decision to send Lorenzo Colombo on loan to Monza in the summer has raised questions, especially with the struggles faced by the team’s attack this season. The arrival of Luka Jovic as Colombo’s replacement has not played out favorably for the Rossoneri.
Colombo, returning from a successful loan spell with Serie A side Lecce, had impressed in his first season in the top tier, contributing six goals, including a crucial penalty securing their contract for this season. Despite his promising preseason performances, the 20-year-old was sent on loan to Monza to ensure guaranteed playing time, as the club pursued Mehdi Taremi, who they were linked with.
In the final days of the transfer window, AC Milan agreed to Colombo’s loan move and settled for Jovic after failing to secure Taremi. However, the decision has been questioned as Colombo has started the season well with three goals in ten appearances, while Jovic has struggled to find the back of the net and make an impact for Milan.
The management’s responsibility for this decision is emphasized, and the situation has made life difficult not only for coach Stefano Pioli but also for veteran striker Olivier Giroud, who has been forced to shoulder an increased workload.
The delay in finalizing Colombo’s loan move, stalled for nearly a month before approval, adds to the scrutiny of the decision-making process. As the season progresses, the Milan management will need to analyze and take responsibility for the situation upfront, especially if improvements are not made in January.
