Brenden Aaronson’s potential return to Leeds United after his loan spell at Union Berlin may not be likely, despite the player’s recent comments expressing openness to the idea. Aaronson’s loan at Union Berlin is set to expire in 2024, and Leeds may be looking for a significant influx of cash next summer by selling some of their loaned-out players on a permanent basis.
In an interview with The Athletic, Aaronson discussed the manner of his exit from Leeds and left the door open for a possible return, saying, “It’s possible. It’s not done and dusted or anything like that. I love the club. I love the guys that I was there with, the connections I made. It was just tough the way it ended.”
However, Phil Hay, a reliable source on Leeds United matters, doesn’t see much chance of Aaronson making a return to Elland Road. Speaking on The Square Ball podcast, Hay mentioned that Aaronson’s form at Union Berlin has deteriorated, and the bridge might have been burned after his swift departure in the summer. Hay emphasized that Aaronson falls into the category of players who were quick to leave and didn’t give new manager Daniel Farke a chance to change their minds.
Hay suggested that Aaronson’s return would be tricky, as there weren’t enough good performances to warrant his comeback, and he would need to fit into Farke’s plans. The criticism Aaronson has received may also be a factor in any potential return to Leeds. Despite his high transfer fee of £25 million, fans expect a return on that investment, and the swift departure may have affected perceptions of the player. Hay believes that Aaronson has burned his bridges at Leeds and a return may not be on the cards.
