Chris Sutton has raised questions about why Manchester United wouldn’t consider Wolves manager Gary O’Neil as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag. O’Neil, who played a key role in keeping Bournemouth in the Premier League before taking over at Wolves, earned praise for his team’s comeback win against Tottenham.
Sutton, speaking on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, expressed admiration for O’Neil and wondered why big clubs like Manchester United wouldn’t look at him as a managerial candidate. He cited O’Neil’s success at Bournemouth and his impressive work at Wolves, highlighting the team’s well-balanced performances.
However, fellow podcast host Ian Ladyman responded with a straightforward ‘no,’ suggesting that O’Neil wouldn’t be considered by Manchester United. This stance provoked frustration from Sutton, who argued that O’Neil’s track record and growing reputation should make him a contender for high-profile managerial positions.
Despite Manchester United’s recent struggles under ten Hag, Sutton acknowledged that O’Neil might not be in consideration at the moment. He suggested that if O’Neil leads Wolves to success in European competitions and continues to achieve positive results, he could eventually become a candidate for larger managerial roles, including a position at Manchester United.
As of now, O’Neil is not likely to be in the running for the Manchester United job in the near future, but Sutton’s remarks reflect the belief that the Wolves manager deserves recognition for his managerial abilities.
