Gareth Southgate has had to make adjustments to the England squad, replacing the injured James Maddison and Callum Wilson. Maddison is sidelined with an ankle injury, while Wilson sustained a hamstring injury during a match against Borussia Dortmund. Wilson is expected to be out for several weeks, while Maddison may be unavailable until the new year.
To fill the gaps in the squad for upcoming games against Malta and North Macedonia, Southgate has called up Manchester City’s Rico Lewis and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer. Notably, this decision means that once again, Anthony
Gordon has been overlooked for international selection, despite his impressive form and Southgate mentioning him last week.
Speaking about the competition for places on the wing before the injuries to Maddison and Wilson, Southgate highlighted the fierce competition in that area, mentioning players like Jarrod Bowen, Anthony Gordon, and Cole Palmer. Despite Gordon’s omission, he has the opportunity to rest and recover during the international break before returning to action with Newcastle in a busy fixture period that kicks off against Chelsea on November 25.
In addition to the changes in the attacking department, Ezri Konsa has been called up to replace Lewis Dunk in the squad. The adjustments come as Southgate aims to navigate the challenges posed by injuries and maintain a competitive squad for the upcoming matches.
