How did the Los Angeles Rams almost miss out on landing quarterback Carson Wentz?

According to reports from Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Carson Wentz almost didn’t end up with the Los Angeles Rams. Wentz signed with the Rams after the New York Jets opted not to make an offer to him, choosing to stick with Zach Wilson as their starting quarterback. Wentz’s representation reached out to the Jets after a disappointing 27-6 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on November 6, where the Jets’ offense struggled significantly.

Wentz had been on the Jets’ list of potential free-agent quarterbacks since Week 1 when they lost Aaron Rodgers to a torn Achilles. If the Jets’ front office and coaching staff had lost confidence in Wilson’s ability to lead the offense, they could have turned to Wentz or another available quarterback to replace Rodgers.

Details of Carson Wentz's contract with Rams revealed

The Rams, facing offensive challenges after the injury to their franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford, became the destination for Wentz. Despite the Rams’ struggles, Wentz now finds himself in Los Angeles.

Details of Wentz’s contract with the Rams were recently revealed by Field Yates of ESPN. Wentz is receiving a base salary of $1.165 million along with a signing bonus of $150,000. His salary is prorated over the remaining nine weeks of the NFL season, totaling $732,500. If the Rams decide to cut him, they would only be responsible for the $150,000 signing bonus.

While Wentz’s compensation is relatively modest in the context of the NFL quarterback market, it represents his first opportunity of the season after being released by the Washington Commanders. Given the circumstances, Wentz may be willing to take whatever opportunity he can get.

The Rams, who did not play on the reported Sunday, are gearing up for a divisional matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. The game is scheduled for 1:25 p.m. PT and will be televised on FOX.
