Ravens Urged to Sign Veteran Cornerback to Bolster Defense

The Baltimore Ravens are facing a significant gap at the cornerback position, and NFL Bleacher Report staff suggests they pursue former Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Bryce Callahan, who is currently unsigned. With Arthur Maulet, a journeyman forced to play in the slot, the Ravens need a more reliable option for their defense, considered one of the best in the NFL.

According to Pro Football Focus, Maulet’s current grade is “61.4,” ranking 66th out of 113 cornerbacks. While not terrible, the Ravens need more depth to contend for a Super Bowl. Bryce Callahan, aged 32, brings experience with 56 career starts and three interceptions in the previous season with the Chargers.

Callahan played 15 games for the Chargers last year and has accumulated seven seasons split between the Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, and the Chargers. Despite occasional health concerns, he could provide insurance, depth, and a veteran presence to bolster the Ravens’ cornerback position.

The Bleacher Report staff suggests that Callahan would be worth considering to compete with Maulet for the slot cornerback position in the latter part of the season.

Additionally, the staff recommends the Ravens explore an offseason move for Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson. Johnson is having a Pro Bowl season and has reportedly been disgruntled with the Bears franchise. Ranked as the sixth-best cornerback in the NFL with a grade of “82.0,” Johnson could be a valuable addition, especially considering the Ravens’ need for younger talent in the cornerback position.

Although securing Johnson might come at a higher cost, the staff believes it would be a worthwhile investment, providing a long-term solution at a premium position.

The Ravens have been dealing with cornerback injuries throughout the season, and star corner Marlon Humphrey is currently week-to-week after a non-contact injury to his left leg during Week 10. Head coach John Harbaugh described Humphrey’s injury as “not long term” but mentioned uncertainty about his availability for the upcoming Thursday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals on November 16. If Humphrey is unable to play, acquiring a player like Bryce Callahan becomes even more critical to address the depth concerns in the cornerback unit.
