Patrick Roberts has agreed to a contract extension with Sunderland, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2026. The versatile forward, who initially joined the Black Cats in the 2022 January transfer window from Manchester City, has become a key figure in Sunderland’s squad, featuring in 14 of their opening 16 Championship matches this season.
Lynden Gooch, a former Sunderland player, responded positively to the news on social media, expressing his delight at seeing Roberts commit his future to the club. Roberts had been part of Sunderland on loan before making the move permanent following the team’s promotion success.
Roberts, 26, provided five goals and seven assists in 42 appearances during the previous campaign. He expressed his enjoyment of being at Sunderland and his eagerness to continue the journey with the club. Sunderland finished sixth in their first Championship campaign back, narrowly missing out on promotion in the play-off semi-finals.
Currently sitting sixth in the Championship table, Sunderland aims for another top-six finish under manager Tony Mowbray, with the ultimate goal of securing promotion to the Premier League. Roberts’ versatility, capable of playing across the front three, makes him a valuable asset to the team. While his contributions in the current season haven’t matched the previous one, his contract extension is seen as a positive development for the club’s future.
