Elite Premier League Manager Turned Away By Huddersfield Town

Ange Postecoglou, current manager of Tottenham Hotspur, had a chance to make his mark in English football back in 2019 when he was interviewed for the Huddersfield Town job. Despite an innovative approach and making it to the final four contenders, he was ultimately passed over for Danny Cowley, who took charge of the Yorkshire side.

David Webb, the Director of Football at Huddersfield, revealed that despite having positive interactions with Postecoglou and appreciating his values and playing style, logistical challenges hindered the process. Cowley, having previously defeated Huddersfield with Lincoln City in the League Cup, had a familiarity with the club and its squad, giving him the edge in the selection process.

Webb spoke highly of Postecoglou’s authenticity and thorough understanding of the Huddersfield squad but noted that the geographical distance posed a challenge in expeditiously finalizing the deal. Ultimately, Cowley’s appointment did not yield long-term success, as he was relieved of his duties after winning only 13 of his 40 games in charge by the summer of 2020.

Postecoglou, however, did not let this setback deter his career trajectory. After leaving his position with the Yokohama Marinos in the J-League, he patiently awaited an opportunity. Celtic came calling in the summer of 2021, and Postecoglou’s success with the Scottish club has become a notable chapter in his managerial career.

Reflecting on the situation, the article suggests that while Danny Cowley seemed like a less risky choice given his proven track record in the lower leagues, hindsight now reveals Ange Postecoglou’s success and the impact he’s making in the Premier League. His honest and authentic managerial approach has garnered respect, making him one of the highly regarded managers in English football.
