In the latest update, football journalist Fabrizio Romano has reiterated Brentford’s stance on their star striker Ivan Toney, indicating that the club is not inclined to sell him in the January transfer window. Instead, they plan to hold out for a significant fee in the summer. Romano highlighted that Brentford’s primary focus is on securing their Premier League status this season, and retaining Toney would play a crucial role in achieving that goal, especially once he returns from his suspension for gambling-related issues.
Romano mentioned in the Caughtoffside Daily Briefing column that Brentford will make every effort to keep Toney during the January transfer window and then consider selling him in the summer. However, he acknowledged that it remains uncertain if this plan will materialize. As of now, there is no precise information on release clauses or a new deal between Toney and Brentford. Romano also noted that there is interest from both Arsenal and Chelsea, but no concrete negotiations have taken place at the moment.
This situation presents a dilemma for Chelsea, who may be interested in Toney but could face challenges in securing his services before the summer. The absence of clear alternatives and the potential return of Christopher Nkunku from injury may influence Chelsea’s decision-making. If Nkunku can contribute goals upon his return, the club might be willing to take the risk of not signing a striker and relying on the existing options, including Armando Broja and Nicolas Jackson, until the end of the season.
