How does Sheffield Wednesday’s wage bill compare to Sheffield United?

In the 2023/24 season, Football League World has compared the wage bills of Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, shedding light on how the two clubs are managing their finances.

As of now, both Sheffield clubs are facing challenges in their respective divisions. Sheffield Wednesday is positioned at the bottom of the Championship table, while Sheffield United finds themselves in the relegation zone of the Premier League. Both teams have only secured one win each in their respective leagues leading into the November international break, indicating a tough season ahead for their fans.

Financial struggles have been apparent for both teams, with expectations and predictions suggesting possible relegation to a lower division at the end of the campaign. Sheffield Wednesday recently appointed Danny Röhl in October to address their lack of form under the previous management.

Here’s a breakdown of the wage bills for each club:

1. **Sheffield United:**
– Annual Wage Bill: £28,756,000
– Weekly Expenditure: £553,000
– Noteworthy is that 15 players earn over one million pounds annually, reflecting either ambition for Premier League success or potential financial mismanagement.
– The highest-paid player is Rhian Brewster with a weekly wage of £35,000, yet he has not scored a goal in the first five games of the season.

2. **Sheffield Wednesday:**

– Annual Wage Bill: £14,584,000
– Weekly Expenditure: £280,462
– Spending just over half of what their rivals are spending on annual wages, Sheffield Wednesday’s most valuable player, Jeff Hendrick, earns £35,000 a week. It’s noted that Hendrick is on loan from Newcastle United, and there’s a possibility that Newcastle contributes a percentage of his weekly wage.
– The Estimated Average Weekly Wage of Sheffield Wednesday players is significantly lower than that of Sheffield United, with only two players, including Hendrick and captain Barry Bannan, earning over a million pounds annually.

The financial disparities between the two clubs highlight the different approaches they are taking in terms of player salaries, and both teams face a challenging season with hopes of avoiding relegation. The information is current as of November 15, 2023, and future appearances and league performances may impact these figures.
