Paris Saint-Germain has encountered a significant setback in the form of a major injury ahead of their upcoming Champions League match against Newcastle United. Seventeen-year-old sensation Warren Zaire-Emery is set to be absent from the crucial clash after sustaining an ankle injury during his debut for France.
In the match at the Allianz Riviera, where Les Bleues secured a resounding 14-0 victory, Zaire-Emery contributed with his country’s third goal. Unfortunately, he suffered a heavy blow to his ankle while tapping in Kingsley Coman’s low cross in the 16th minute, necessitating immediate treatment and subsequent substitution. An examination revealed a sprained ankle, prompting France manager Didier Deschamps to announce that the midfielder would be sidelined for “several weeks.”
Deschamps expressed relief that there was no fracture but acknowledged the severity of the sprain. Despite the initial positivity, the concern lingered due to the violent nature of the incident. Deschamps hoped for a speedy recovery, emphasizing the desire for Zaire-Emery to be remembered for his debut goal rather than the unfortunate injury.
Shortly after the game, Deschamps provided a more concrete timescale, stating that the significant injury would likely require several weeks to heal. Zaire-Emery returned to PSG for further treatment, and a statement from France confirmed his availability to the club.
The statement detailed the midfielder’s injury, a sprained right ankle, and the subsequent medical examinations. Zaire-Emery underwent X-rays and an MRI at the Saint-Jean de Cagnes clinic on the sea. The French delegation, preparing to travel to Athens, will be without the injured player, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
As PSG faces Monaco on Friday and prepares to host Newcastle on Tuesday, Zaire-Emery’s absence will be keenly felt, given his regular starting role in the team’s 15 fixtures this season. The Ligue 1 champions, who suffered a 4-1 defeat to Newcastle in the previous encounter, now face the challenge of securing a win to keep their Champions League knockout stage qualification hopes alive.
