Pedro Neto’s future at Wolverhampton Wanderers is uncertain following his impressive start to the season, with a hamstring injury sidelining him. Despite Neto’s absence, Wolves secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, bouncing back from a disappointing loss to Sheffield United. Pablo Sarabia stepped up in Neto’s absence, delivering a goal and an assist.
While Wolves eagerly await Neto’s return to full fitness, there are concerns that a larger club might try to lure him away. Instead of seeking an expensive replacement, manager Gary O’Neil could turn to the promising Academy prospect, Owen Hesketh, as a cost-effective alternative. The 21-year-old midfielder has been catching attention with standout performances in Premier League 2, showcasing his versatility as a central attacking midfielder or left winger, similar to Neto’s role.
Hesketh, a Wales U21 international, has demonstrated his goal-scoring prowess with four goals and one assist in eight Premier League 2 games. His style of play, marked by weaving runs and precise ball distribution, bears resemblance to Neto’s senior-level performance. Unlike Neto, Hesketh poses a more obvious goal threat, displaying clinical finishing and creativity. His success in the EFL Trophy against Notts County highlights his ability to handle pressure and contribute to the team’s attacking efforts.
Having consistently impressed at the youth level since joining Wolves’ Academy in 2019, Hesketh won the Academy Player of the Season two years ago, coincidentally in the same year Neto received the senior equivalent. The parallels in their playing styles and accolades make Hesketh a compelling option to fill Neto’s shoes if the latter departs in 2024. With other young talents like Nathan Fraser making the leap to the first team, Hesketh hopes to follow suit and contribute to Wolves’ senior squad, potentially saving the club significant expenses in seeking a replacement for Neto.
