Jamie Carragher, a legendary figure from Liverpool, has expressed his belief that Newcastle United deserved to experience a sense of disappointment due to their misjudgment in the summer transfer window with the signing of Sandro Tonali. Tonali, an Italy international, arrived at Newcastle from AC Milan in the summer but featured in only eight Premier League games before facing a substantial ban related to a gambling addiction.
Carragher, in a video clip, voiced his concern about Newcastle potentially rectifying the situation by signing Ruben Neves on loan in the January transfer window. According to Carragher, the club should face consequences for not conducting thorough due diligence on Tonali. He suggests that it would be a form of punishment for Newcastle, indicating that the club should bear the brunt of their oversight in evaluating Tonali’s suitability for the team.
While acknowledging that Newcastle might argue they couldn’t have predicted Tonali’s off-field issues, Carragher maintains that Eddie Howe, the manager, may now feel compelled to reinforce the midfield. The argument could be made that, in a similar vein, Tonali could have suffered a severe injury, and in such a case, there might be more sympathy if Newcastle sought to sign a replacement as cover. The situation raises questions about the balance between a club’s responsibility to thoroughly vet signings and the unpredictability of certain issues that can arise in a player’s career.
