Gillingham should focus on securing a new deal with Huddersfield Town for their winger, especially with the recent appointment of Stephen Clemence as manager. Although the team began the season well under former boss Neil Harris, a decision was made to part ways and take a different direction.
Clemence, in his first managerial role, has the task of steering the club back into League One. Taking over a team molded by the previous manager, he may seek to make adjustments, possibly with new signings in January. Amidst this, it is crucial for Gillingham to consider making Conor Mahoney’s loan move permanent.
Conor Mahoney’s journey has seen him move between various clubs since leaving Blackburn Rovers in 2017. After spells with AFC Bournemouth, Barnsley, Birmingham City, and Millwall, he joined Huddersfield in 2022. Currently on loan with Gillingham, Mahoney’s contract with Huddersfield expires at the end of the season, presenting an opportune time for Gillingham to explore a permanent deal in January.
While Mahoney struggled in his previous season with Huddersfield, his form has drastically improved at Gillingham. With three goals and two assists in 14 games, he has surpassed his previous records. His overall contributions per 90 minutes, including goals and assists, have notably increased compared to past seasons.
Mahoney’s confidence is evident in his performance, showcasing improved shooting statistics with 27 shots, 11 on target, and three goals. Averaging 2.05 shots per 90 minutes and a shot accuracy of 40.7%, Mahoney is playing arguably the best football of his career.
Given Mahoney’s contract situation and his current form, Gillingham should act swiftly to secure a long-term agreement in January rather than waiting until the summer. The risk lies in potential interest from higher-tier teams if Mahoney continues his impressive performance. Regardless of Gillingham’s promotion status, waiting until the summer may make it challenging to retain Mahoney, making a January deal a priority.
