In the latest updates from BirminghamLive, both Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have offered their predictions on Wolverhampton Wanderers’ season under manager Gary O’Neil. Initially, at the beginning of the season, Lineker and Shearer had foreseen Wolves being involved in a relegation struggle following the departure of Julen Lopetegui. However, under O’Neil’s leadership, Wolves have experienced a positive start to the season and currently sit just six points behind sixth-placed Manchester United.
Acknowledging their earlier predictions, Lineker, speaking on the Rest is Football Podcast, defended himself, attributing the initial outlook to the managerial transition from Lopetegui. He praised O’Neil’s impact, stating that Wolves, currently in 12th place, could have been higher in the table if not for VAR decisions costing them around five points. Lineker admitted to underestimating the team and adjusted his forecast to a lower mid-table finish, expressing appreciation for the job O’Neil has done.
Shearer also commended O’Neil’s performance, noting the manager’s measured approach and justified frustration with officials due to contentious decisions. Reflecting on O’Neil’s past challenges at Bournemouth, Shearer expressed confidence that Wolves, under O’Neil’s guidance, would not be in a relegation battle and would have more than enough to secure their stay in the Premier League.
The positive sentiments from both Lineker and Shearer suggest a favorable outlook for Wolves under Gary O’Neil’s management, indicating a shift from their earlier predictions of a relegation-threatened campaign.
