Scott Robertson will delay the announcement of the next captain for the New Zealand rugby team until the aftermath of the Rugby World Cup has settled. Having recently taken over as the head coach of the All Blacks, succeeding Ian Foster, Robertson is set to lead the team in his first game in July 2024. However, before then, he faces the task of resolving the captaincy issue.
The current captain, Sam Cane, who assumed the role in 2020 after Kieran Read’s retirement, is a contender once again upon his return from a sabbatical in Japan. Despite Cane’s experience in the position, Robertson, who previously coached the Crusaders, may be inclined towards someone familiar with his coaching style.
Acknowledging the importance of giving space after the World Cup, Robertson stated, “I am trying to give a little bit of a runway post-World Cup before I start having conversations around captains.” He emphasized the significance of respect in these discussions and mentioned engaging in conversations with senior All Blacks to understand their reflections on the World Cup and their insights into what needs to evolve on and off the field.
While Cane’s absence from the Chiefs during the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season due to his time in Japan is a factor, Robertson also considers the situations of other key players, such as Ardie Savea and Beauden Barrett, who have secured deals in Asia. Barrett’s future with New Zealand Rugby remains uncertain, but Robertson, despite the player’s age, expressed openness to his return, stating, “He’s hugely experienced, and it doesn’t matter where you are, you have to play well.” Robertson emphasized that the focus is on performance, and the players in Japan will be monitored, provided with feedback, and stay connected with the team.
