Warriors urged to use new NRL exemption to buy a big-name All Black’ to join

A prominent rugby league journalist in Australia is suggesting that the New Zealand Warriors should actively pursue the signing of a high-profile All Black player to join Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, who has recently returned to the NRL team after two seasons in rugby union. The NRL now permits clubs to sign players from rival codes without salary cap constraints, and the Sydney Morning Herald’s chief rugby league writer, Adrian Proszenko, argues that the Warriors should take advantage of this opportunity.

In his column titled “The gamble your NRL club must take to be a success in 2024,” Proszenko emphasizes that the Warriors already have the commitment of cross-code star Tuivasa-Sheck, presenting an opportunity to deal a significant blow to struggling rugby union. He suggests that All Blacks such as Ardie Savea, Damian McKenzie, and Richie Mo’unga could be potential targets due to their impressive skill sets.

However, Mo’unga’s recent three-year contract with a Japanese rugby union club and Savea’s season sabbatical in Japan with Kobelco Kobe Steelers might complicate potential moves. McKenzie, currently committed to the Chiefs, is seen as a leading contender for Mo’unga’s vacated All Blacks’ No 10 jersey.

Proszenko’s column extends beyond the Warriors, offering recommendations for other NRL clubs. He suggests that the Cowboys release Jason Taumalolo and that the Sharks should attempt to recruit veteran Kiwi enforcer Jarad Waerea-Hargreaves from the Roosters to bolster their forward lineup. Additionally, Proszenko proposes that the Raiders retain recently-departed Kiwis coach Michael Maguire as an assistant coach and potential successor to Ricky Stuart.

For the Wests Tigers, Proszenko recommends securing former Wallabies and Argentina rugby union coach Michael Cheika as head of football. This move would provide support to rookie Kiwi coach Benji Marshall, offering an experienced figure for guidance.
