All Blacks captain Sam Cane reveals ‘long chat’ with Scott Robertson before

Sam Cane has stated that he extensively discussed his plans with the new All Blacks head coach, Scott Robertson, before departing for Japan, aiming to position himself for Test selection in 2024. The 31-year-old has arrived in Asia to play for Tokyo Sungoliath on a short-term contract, returning to New Zealand before the July Test series.

While Cane will be available for those matches, it remains uncertain if he aligns with Robertson’s strategic choices. The head coach, succeeding Ian Foster, has not yet revealed his decision on the team captaincy, leaving room for speculation. Cane is a contender, but Robertson may prefer someone familiar from his Crusaders days, with Scott Barrett among those potentially considered.
