Rotherham United is reportedly in the process of selecting a new manager, with Nathan Jones among the candidates interviewed. However, it’s uncertain whether the new appointment will be in place for the upcoming game against Birmingham City on Saturday. The urgency to finalize the decision may have increased after Tuesday’s 4-1 defeat to Hull City, a match that underscored Rotherham’s struggles with away form, contributing to their relegation-threatened status.
Caretaker manager Wayne Carlisle, who led the team to a commendable 1-1 draw with Leeds United, acknowledges that his chances of securing the permanent role are slim. Rotherham has struggled on the road, with only one of their 12 points coming from away matches, and they haven’t won on their travels for over a year. The away form remains a puzzle for Carlisle, who has been part of the coaching staff, previously as Matt Taylor’s assistant.
The defeat on Tuesday and a late win for Queens Park Rangers have dropped Rotherham to 23rd place in the Championship. Nathan Jones, known for his successful tenure at Luton Town, is one of the interviewed candidates, alongside Gary Rowett and Leam Richardson.
Carlisle’s slim chances of securing the permanent position may have dwindled further after Tuesday’s defeat. He believes the club is looking at other options for the managerial role, possibly seeking someone with Championship experience. Despite expressing hope, Carlisle acknowledges that it’s likely someone else will be appointed.
The key challenge for the new manager will be addressing Rotherham’s poor away form. The team emphasizes the need to replicate their strong home performances in away games. The upcoming match against Birmingham City might see Rotherham without Fred Onyedinma, who experienced a hamstring issue during Tuesday’s warm-up. The decision to replace him was made between Seb Revan and Arvin Appiah, with Revan chosen for his defensive capabilities.
