Darren Moore commended his Huddersfield Town team for their defensive efforts, emphasizing that their effectiveness without possession was the decisive factor in their unexpected 2-1 victory against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
Despite having minimal possession, Moore’s side created superior opportunities early in the game, securing a deserved lead with Michal Helik’s goal. Although Luke O’Nien equalized before halftime and Sunderland improved in the second half, Denalo Burgzorg’s goal ultimately made the difference.
Moore acknowledged that his players could have displayed more prowess in ball possession but highlighted their off-the-ball work and commitment as the key elements contributing to their triumph.
Reflecting on the performance, Moore stated, “We controlled crucial areas of the pitch without the ball, working collectively as a unit. Our proactive efforts early on nullified their spaces, making it challenging for Sunderland to execute their patterns of play. Despite some missed opportunities, credit to the players for their effective off-the-ball work.”
Expressing respect for Sunderland’s record and the work of their management team, Moore emphasized the importance of resilience in denying the opposition opportunities. He also mentioned a missed chance early in the game and acknowledged the learning process for his team.
Regarding Denalo Burgzorg’s winning goal, Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray deemed it ‘ridiculous’ from his team’s perspective, attributing it to an impressive tackle by Jobe Bellingham that led to Burgzorg capitalizing on a loose ball.
Moore admitted that Burgzorg was fortunate to remain on the pitch, as he had planned to substitute him before the goal-scoring opportunity. He explained that the extended period of Sunderland possession prevented the substitution, ultimately working in their favor.
Despite the need to manage Burgzorg’s minutes as he returns from injury, Moore praised the striker for his contribution, describing him as a handful and acknowledging the importance of his goal. Additionally, Moore acknowledged goalkeeper Chris Maxwell for a crucial save just before Burgzorg’s decisive goal.
