Patrick Roberts delivered an honest assessment following Sunderland’s 2-1 defeat against Huddersfield at the Stadium of Light, stressing the need for players to take responsibility for the disappointing performance.
Despite dominating possession with 76%, Sunderland couldn’t secure a win, slipping to a 2-1 loss with goals from Michal Helik and Delano Burgzorg, countered by Luke O’Nien’s equalizer just before half-time. The result dropped Sunderland to 11th in the Championship, four points away from a play-off place.
Roberts acknowledged the challenge of breaking down Huddersfield’s defensive setup and expressed disappointment in the team’s performance in that aspect. He recognized the need for improvement, emphasizing that the players, himself included, should be delivering better results, scoring goals, and providing an enjoyable experience for the fans.
As one of the more experienced players in Sunderland’s young team at 26, Roberts addressed the issue of injecting more urgency into their play. Despite the presence of several younger players in the squad, he emphasized that, regardless of age, there are expectations at a big club like Sunderland. Roberts stressed the importance of players going out with the mindset of impressing and proving themselves as valuable contributors to the team.
Taking a collective responsibility, Roberts highlighted that the team, along with the manager, needs to be accountable for their performance. He acknowledged that there is work to be done, emphasizing the need for improvement and a commitment to producing better results on the pitch. With a call for everyone to dig in, recover, and prepare for the upcoming weekend, Roberts emphasized the collective effort required to bounce back from the disappointing defeat.
