Alan Shearer has disclosed that UEFA shared their frustration with him over the controversial 98th-minute penalty awarded in PSG’s match on Tuesday night. The penalty, given against Tino Livramento, was later deemed a “huge error” by the VAR official and on-field referee.
In a conversation with UEFA, Shearer learned that the VAR team acknowledged the mistake immediately after the game. Consequently, both the VAR official and the referee have been relieved of their Champions League duties for the next two weeks. UEFA confirmed to Shearer that they were equally displeased with the decision and were as disappointed as the viewers.
During the discussion on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer mentioned, “They said that the referee and the VAR knew straight away after the game that they had made a huge error, and they would no longer be involved in the games this evening [Wednesday].” He further explained that the officials will not be part of the upcoming round of games in two weeks, and they won’t be providing comments on the matter.
Gary Lineker chimed in on the podcast, expressing bewilderment at how anyone could perceive the incident as a penalty. He suggested that external factors, such as fan pressure, might have influenced the decision, especially considering the timing of the incident at the end of the game and the criticism from Paris supporters.
