Everton Football Club has taken official steps to appeal the 10-point deduction imposed on them. The club’s statement, released through their website, states that they have submitted their appeal to the chair of the Premier League’s Judicial Panel, challenging the decision made by a Premier League Commission. An Appeal Board will be appointed to review and hear the case.
The 10-point deduction was a consequence of Everton’s violation of financial fair play and sustainability rules over a three-year period from 2018 to 2021. This penalty dropped them from 14th place with 14 points to 19th place with four points. The decision led to strong protests from Everton fans during their recent 3-0 defeat to Manchester United, the first game after the deduction.
Various figures in the football community, including current professionals, ex-players, and pundits, have expressed their disapproval of the situation. Everton, in their appeal, reportedly assert that their 2022-23 accounts are well within budget, aiming to avoid a second points deduction under new fast-track rules introduced by the Premier League.
Manager Sean Dyche addressed the challenges posed by the sanctions at a press conference ahead of Everton’s upcoming match against Nottingham Forest. He emphasized the need to focus on moving forward on the pitch amidst distractions. Dyche acknowledged the surprise within the football community over the 10-point deduction and emphasized the importance of accepting the current situation, being flexible-minded, and concentrating on winning matches to propel the club forward.
