Ryan Reynolds given five-year Premier League challenge for Wrexham

Wrexham, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have been given a five-year target to reach the Premier League by former player Brett Ormerod. The Welsh club’s recent success includes winning the National League last season, earning them a place back in the Football League. The global attention garnered by Reynolds and McElhenney, along with the Welcome to Wrexham documentary series, has significantly increased interest in the team.

Wrexham, currently in League Two and in contention for promotion to the third tier, has expressed aspirations to climb to the top of the football pyramid, drawing inspiration from Luton’s journey from non-league to the top-flight. The owners’ ambition, combined with the club’s historical fanbase and newfound support from the Americans, has fueled optimism about achieving this lofty goal.

Former Wrexham player Brett Ormerod, who experienced the club’s struggles in non-league between 2012 and 2014, believes that the dream of reaching the Championship or even the Premier League could be realized within the next five years. Ormerod acknowledges the owners’ ambition and the significant support they bring to the club. He expresses his best wishes for Wrexham’s future, acknowledging the challenges the fans have endured, including financial struggles that threatened the club’s existence in the past.

Wrexham’s recent ascent and increased prominence in the football world have naturally attracted attention and perhaps some envy from other quarters. Brett Ormerod acknowledges that while he wouldn’t label other clubs as bitter, there is a sense of jealousy that is understandable given Wrexham’s current situation.

Ormerod emphasizes the long-term commitment of Wrexham’s owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Unlike some owners who might enter football with short-term goals, Reynolds and McElhenney sought a club with an existing fanbase and a rich history. Ormerod expresses the hope that the Hollywood duo remains dedicated to Wrexham over the long run, recognizing the potential danger if their commitment falters.

Drawing parallels with larger teams like Reading, Ormerod highlights the good intentions often accompanying new owners. However, he notes the financial challenges and the reality that not every venture into football is profitable. Some owners, not fully grasping the financial dynamics, might end up losing substantial sums and subsequently walk away, leaving the club in a precarious financial state. In such situations, the ultimate sufferers are the club itself and, most significantly, the loyal fans.
