Gary O’Neil expressed his bitter disappointment over a specific moment during Wolves’ match against Arsenal. Despite putting up a strong fight and almost completing a comeback, Wolves suffered a 2-1 defeat against the league leaders. The team conceded two goals in the opening 15 minutes but managed to keep Arsenal at bay for the rest of the match. A late goal by Matheus Cunha provided hope for a comeback.
While the defeat itself had several positives, including a resilient defensive performance, the biggest setback was the injury to goalkeeper Jose Sa. However, O’Neil highlighted a particular moment that disappointed him the most in the game. Speaking to BeIN Sports after the match, he discussed the first goal conceded by Wolves.
O’Neil explained that the disappointment stemmed from a situation they had worked hard on, anticipating it would arise during the game. He emphasized the team’s effort to surround Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka with bodies, but despite their preparation, there were a couple of ricochets, and defender Daws (Dawson) appeared somewhat hesitant in the penalty area. Saka managed to navigate through multiple bodies in a scenario they had prepped for, leading to the conceded goal.
Despite this disappointment, O’Neil acknowledged the quality of Saka and the challenges posed by one of the league’s best players. Overall, he expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, especially considering the defensive efforts. Looking ahead, O’Neil is preparing his team for upcoming matches against Burnley and Nottingham Forest, maintaining a positive outlook despite missing key players from the lineup.
