Charlton Athletic has secured an agreement with youth prospect Micah Mbick, who has signed his first professional deal with the club. The 17-year-old forward has been with Charlton since the Under 10s category and has showcased impressive form for the U18s and U21s this season, scoring 12 goals in 13 competitions.
Mbick gained wider attention when he made his late debut in the FA Cup First Round game against Cray Wanderers, scoring just three minutes into his first appearance as Charlton won 6-1. He demonstrated his finishing ability by slotting into an empty net after the goalkeeper parried a late effort.
Charlton boss Michael Appleton praised Mbick, highlighting his athleticism, physicality, and goal-scoring prowess with both feet. Appleton expressed excitement about working with Mbick in the long term, emphasizing the player’s maturity beyond his years.
Mbick, delighted with securing his first professional deal, spoke positively about Charlton’s youth set-up and the opportunities the club provides for young players. The club described the deal as ‘long term,’ indicating a commitment to Mbick’s development.
Charlton’s academy has a history of producing successful players, including Semi Ajayi, Ademola Lookman, Jonjo Shelvey, and Kasey Palmer. Academy Manager Steve Avory highlighted the thorough recruitment process and coaching methods contributing to the development of players like Mbick.
Mbick made his second senior appearance in Charlton’s FA Cup tie against Gillingham, although the team was defeated 2-0. Despite the loss, the focus on developing young talent remains a significant aspect of Charlton’s strategy, providing a pathway for players like Mbick to contribute to the first team.
