Following the injury to Nick Pope, Newcastle United are now investigating a 33-year-old Spanish goalkeeper.

Newcastle United is reportedly considering a move for former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea following an injury to their current goalkeeper, Nick Pope, who may be out for up to five months. Pope sustained the injury during a match against Manchester United.

The Daily Mail has reported that Newcastle is exploring the possibility of signing David de Gea, who is currently a free agent. Newcastle had previously identified De Gea as a potential weak link in the Manchester United team, particularly in terms of distribution, according to information revealed by Jacob Murphy in April after a 2-0 victory against Manchester United.

While Pope has been criticized for his weak distribution despite being an excellent shot-stopper, the addition of De Gea might not solve this particular issue. However, the Spanish goalkeeper brings a wealth of Premier League experience and is available immediately without the need for a transfer fee.

One potential concern for Newcastle could be the high wage demands of David de Gea, as his previous salary at Manchester United was £375,000 per week. This figure could pose a challenge for Newcastle, given their existing wage structure.

The injury to Nick Pope is considered a significant blow to Newcastle, with the goalkeeper now facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Pope had recently delivered a standout performance against PSG and was aiming to secure a place in the England team for the upcoming summer, but his injury has cast doubt on those plans. Martin Dubravka is the current backup choice for Newcastle, but manager Eddie Howe might opt for a more experienced replacement like David de Gea for the crucial upcoming matches.
