Sunderland have begun talks over a new contract with 22-year-old, agent reveal

Sunderland has initiated discussions regarding a contract extension for full-back Niall Huggins, according to a report from iNews. The versatile defender joined Sunderland from Leeds United in the summer of 2021 and has overcome challenges to secure a spot in Tony Mowbray’s side.

Having experienced difficult seasons with injuries, the 22-year-old Welshman has remained fit this season, making 15 Championship appearances for the Black Cats. Although he is currently contracted until the summer of 2025, Sunderland is reportedly considering a new contract for Huggins as a testament to his abilities and a reward for his recent contributions to the team.

Huggins’ agent, Ian Harte, spoke positively about his client’s situation, acknowledging his outstanding season and patience in overcoming injuries. Harte emphasized Huggins’ versatility to play both right-back and left-back and mentioned his well-deserved call-up to the Wales national team. While Huggins still has a year and a half left on his current contract, Harte suggested that negotiations are underway, stating, “He just needs to keep doing what he’s doing, he’s got a year and a half left, so we’ll just have to watch this space.”

Given the challenges Huggins faced in his Sunderland career, supporters are pleased to see him make a positive impact this season. Securing his future with a new contract would not only eliminate uncertainties associated with players entering the last 12 months of their deals but also demonstrate the club’s confidence and support for Huggins after his breakthrough into the starting XI. While the exact details of the agreement remain to be seen, Harte’s “watch this space” comment implies that progress is in motion.
