Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has acknowledged the attacking prowess of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold. The English international played a crucial role for Liverpool, scoring a late winner against Fulham at Anfield over the weekend, following his performance in rescuing a point against Manchester City the previous week.
Burn, speaking on The Monday Night Club, discussed Alexander-Arnold’s unique role as a hybrid fullback for both Liverpool and the national team. Burn commented on the player’s exceptional ball skills and acknowledged that while some critics have pointed out his defensive capabilities, his attacking contributions are undeniable.
Burn further commented on the idea of Alexander-Arnold playing a hybrid role, noting that it seems to suit Jurgen Klopp’s tactics well. He raised the question of whether Klopp prefers this hybrid role over having Alexander-Arnold solely as a central midfielder, which would require bringing in a dedicated right-back.
There are early indications that Alexander-Arnold’s goals in recent games have come from more central positions, suggesting that the fullback could eventually thrive in Liverpool’s midfield. The experiment of playing him in a more central role has proven successful for England as well, making him a genuine contender for a midfield role in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024.
Given Alexander-Arnold’s ability to cut inside and create chances for himself in the attack, there’s speculation that Liverpool might shift him to a more central position in the future. The 25-year-old’s unique talent is recognized, and many believe that he is destined to play a pivotal role in Liverpool’s central midfield at some point in his career.
