Sunderland eyeing move for new “extraordinary” manager as Tony Mowbray replacement

The dismissal of Tony Mowbray as Sunderland’s manager, despite the team sitting ninth in the Championship and close to the play-off places, has created a pivotal moment for the club. Mowbray had previously guided Sunderland into the top six in the last campaign, only to lose in the semi-final to eventual Wembley winners Luton Town. The decision to part ways with Mowbray came after a 1-1 draw against Millwall.

Now, Sunderland is on the lookout for a new manager to take the reins at The Stadium of Light, and reports suggest that an impressive candidate has emerged. Reims manager Will Still is reportedly on the shortlist to replace Mowbray. According to reliable reporter Ed Aarons of The Guardian, Still’s name has entered consideration, and the club’s owner, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, is said to be impressed with the English manager’s achievements in Ligue 1.

In a statement released on the club’s official website, sporting director Kristjaan Speakman expressed gratitude to Mowbray for his contributions but emphasized the club’s commitment to its ambition and strategy. The focus has now shifted to finding the right candidate for the managerial position.

Will Still, known for his work at Reims, has garnered praise for his managerial skills. Despite Reims facing a £22k fine last season due to Still not possessing a UEFA Pro License, the club persisted with him, finishing 11th in Ligue 1. In the current campaign, Reims has climbed to as high as fifth in the league standings. Still’s unconventional path and success have earned him acclaim, with observers highlighting his ability to do an “extraordinary job” despite facing challenges.

While it remains uncertain whether Still will make the move to Sunderland, the English manager appears to have the credentials to lead the team. The urgency to secure a new manager is emphasized, especially with the busy festive period approaching. Sunderland’s decision on Mowbray’s successor could potentially shape the team’s trajectory as they aim to make a push for promotion to the Premier League.
