Wrexham star Paul Mullin reveals how he embarrassed himself in front of Rob McElhenney’s wife

Wrexham striker Paul Mullin recently shared an amusing incident from the 2022-23 season when he found himself in an embarrassing situation in front of Kaitlin Olson, the wife of Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney.

The incident occurred during Wrexham’s crucial match against Yeovil towards the end of their record-breaking promotion push. McElhenney, accompanied by his partner and fellow ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ cast members Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton, was in attendance. Mullin, a fan of the show, suffered a foot-in-mouth moment during a conversation with Olson.

In his autobiography, ‘My Wrexham Story,’ Mullin recounted the incident: “The next game, against relegation-threatened Yeovil on 18 April, was noticeable for another reason other than us getting three valuable points. It seemed like the entire cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia came over for the game. Well, I say the entire cast – Danny DeVito was absent. A pity, really, as I can’t think of anything more surreal than looking up into the stands and seeing Danny DeVito sat there.”

Mullin continued, “As I mentioned earlier, I’m a big fan of It’s Always Sunny, which made me a little bit tongue-tied when I met a few people afterwards. I was chatting to Rob McElhenney’s wife, Kaitlin Olson, about how the live touring version of It’s Always Sunny happened to be in Dublin at the time. ‘I know,’ she said, ‘I’m in it.’ I felt so stupid. I’d watched so many episodes of the show – I knew full well she was in it – and yet I’d said something totally daft like that. I’m like anyone else – sometimes you hear yourself asking a stupid question before you can even stop yourself, especially when you meet someone for the first time. Thankfully she saw the funny side.”

Despite the momentary embarrassment, Wrexham secured a crucial 3-0 victory over Yeovil, putting them on the brink of title glory and ultimately leading to their promotion back into the Football League. Mullin, who contributed to the win, later encountered Olson again during the squad’s trip to Las Vegas in the summer of 2023.

Looking ahead, Wrexham, under the management of Phil Parkinson, is aiming for further success in 2024 as they compete for promotion from League Two.
