Fluto Shinzawa from The Athletic has reported that Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy is dealing with an upper-body injury and is listed as day-to-day. Although there is limited information about the injury, Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery clarified that it is not a head injury.
McAvoy had to leave the game against the Buffalo Sabres just over a minute into the third period of their recent 3-1 loss. The extent of the injury is not fully known, and the team is awaiting further evaluation. This news is concerning for the Bruins, as McAvoy holds a key role in their defensive lineup and leads in various statistical categories.
With defenseman Derek Forbort already on LTIR, McAvoy’s potential absence would leave a significant gap in the Bruins’ defensive roster. It is suggested that players like Ian Mitchell may have to step in to compensate for McAvoy’s potential absence.
In the current season, McAvoy has been a standout performer, nearly maintaining a point-per-game pace with three goals and 14 assists in 21 games. However, his recent performance has seen a dip, with a combined -11 plus/minus rating in the last 10 games. While plus/minus doesn’t tell the whole story, it indicates a slump in McAvoy’s performance, despite contributing six assists in the same period. The 25-year-old defenseman’s average ice time of over 24 minutes per game may be taking a toll, as it’s nearly a minute higher than his career average.
