Rotherham United is on the verge of confirming Leam Richardson as their new permanent manager after a vacancy lasting three and a half weeks. The departure of Matt Taylor left the club without a full-time boss, with Taylor now working at League One’s Bristol Rovers. Richardson, a Leeds native aged 44, emerged as a leading contender for the position following Taylor’s dismissal on November 13. Previously with Wigan Athletic until November 2022, Richardson, who had managed Accrington Stanley, took over from Paul Cook at Wigan in 2020, securing promotion back to the Championship in 2021-22.
Reflecting on his break from management, Richardson spoke to the Wigan Observer about recharging and preparing for the next challenge. He expressed professional reflection, maintaining core beliefs, and discarding less important aspects. Richardson also highlighted the opportunity to broaden his learning by observing other sports disciplines. He emphasized the importance of re-energizing before focusing on the future and the upcoming challenge, expressing confidence that he will recognize the right opportunity when it arises.
While Richardson appears to be the frontrunner, other candidates, such as Nathan Jones, declined the Millers’ job. Mark Warburton and Gary Rowett, former managers of Glasgow Rangers, Brentford, Nottingham Forest, and Millwall, Derby, Stoke, respectively, were also considered. Additionally, former Millers boss Steve Evans was in the mix. Rotherham United is set to face Swansea on Saturday in their upcoming fixture.
