Claude Giroux and Vladimir Tarasenko each contributed a goal and an assist as the Ottawa Senators secured a 5-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night. However, the game was marred by a hit from behind that left Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin unconscious on the ice.
Larkin was cross-checked in the back of the head and neck by Ottawa’s Mathieu Joseph, leading to a frightening moment. Larkin was down for about a minute, regaining consciousness before being assisted to the locker room. The Red Wings later released a statement during the game, indicating that Larkin was being evaluated by medical staff, and coach Derek Lalonde expressed concern about the incident.
During a first-period power play, Larkin took the hit from Joseph and fell into the Senators’ Parker Kelly, who also made contact. Joseph and Kelly received roughing penalties, while Detroit’s David Perron received a match penalty for intent to injure after cross-checking Artem Zub next to the prone Larkin.
Patrick Kane, a nine-time All-Star who recently joined the Red Wings, scored his first goal of the season. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome Ottawa’s offensive prowess. Dominik Kubalik, Tim Stutzle, and Jake Sanderson also found the net for the Senators.
Despite Larkin’s injury and Perron’s ejection, Detroit, with only nine forwards due to the circumstances, struggled to mount a comeback. Ottawa goalie Joonas Korpisalo made 30 saves for his 100th regular-season victory.
The game’s intense moments included Detroit’s Christian Fischer and Joseph dropping the gloves in the third period, reflecting the team’s commitment to standing up for their captain.
The Senators’ next game is against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday, while the Red Wings will face the Dallas Stars on Monday night.
