Daniel Farke believes the 21-year-old will not play for Leeds again.

Daniel Farke has refrained from utilizing Leo Hjelde in the Championship since the season’s opening day, and with the growing injury list, there were inquiries about the possibility of bringing the Leeds United player into the side. Hjelde, 20, initially started on the left side of Leeds’ defense during a 2-2 draw with Cardiff but was substituted at half-time.

Sam Byram has since become the preferred choice, with Junior Firpo returning after an injury. Despite featuring in cup competitions, Hjelde has not played in the league since the opening day. His last inclusion in the matchday squad was during a 0-0 draw against Sheffield Wednesday in September.

With Byram, Firpo, and Jamie Shackleton sidelined ahead of the match against Sunderland, the question arose about the potential inclusion of Hjelde. However, Farke downplayed the likelihood of recalling the Norwegian, stating that while he is an available option, the focus is currently on other players. In recent weeks, Hjelde has been with the U21 side.

Farke’s comments are seen as less than optimistic for Hjelde’s immediate prospects, especially given the injuries in the team. Even with various options out, including Byram, Firpo, and Shackleton, Farke mentioned considering other players over Hjelde. This suggests that Hjelde may not see much playing time until at least January.
